Tyler Edmund Smith a potter and teaching artist based in the Chicago area. He works primarily in ceramics but also makes prints and other two dimensional work.
Layering functions as a central logic within the work. Across ceramics and works on paper, materials accumulate through repeated application. In clay, this includes glazes, underglazes, colored slips, and terra sigillata, often delivered through aerosol processes that distribute pigment and glaze as suspended fields across the form. On paper, sprayed paint and layered pigments produce similarly stratified surfaces.
Many of the ceramic works begin from familiar functional formats such as cups, vessels, lamps, and planters. These utilitarian structures act as armatures for material experimentation. Within the kiln, layered surfaces destabilize and reorganize. Glazes break, bubble, crawl, and intermingle, producing surfaces that register movement, heat, and chemical interaction.
Alongside studio production, Tyler works as a teaching artist. His experience includes critique, instruction, and studio management within classroom and workshop environments. Working closely with emerging artists and supporting the development of individual taste and critical voice remains central to his approach to both teaching and making.
